Custody Mediation: Foundational Concepts

Custody mediation provides a unique opportunity for mediators to change the lives of the families with whom they work. Custody mediators can help parents shift the focus of their relationship away from the animosity that led to their separation and back onto the children they love. Child custody is among the most common matters mediated, and mediators need knowledge, skills and tools to gain traction in this competitive market.  This course delivers.

This 4.5 hour on-demand course covers the basics of custody mediation, such as parenting styles and relationships, whether mediation is appropriate, the developmental stages of childhood and the differences between legal and physical custody.  It also tackles some of the trickier issues that arise, including who should attend the mediation, first right of refusal, relocation cases, substance abuse clauses, child abuse & neglect allegations and much more.

This course addresses how to use the mediation process to help parents identify their goals as co-parents, consider custody arrangements that will work for their unique circumstances, and address special circumstances that often arise. Mediators will be given access to wording and sample calendars for a variety of physical custody plans.  Seasoned MTC instructors will reveal their own tried and true methods for immediately focusing the parents on their children rather than on their problems with one another.

Melissa Mangiaracina and Margaret Crowley draw on their experience mediating hundreds of custody cases, sharing their own tips and techniques for successful custody mediation.

Approved for 4.5 general CLE credits in Nevada.
